Manchester City Bites Back with 4-0

After watching the Etihad derby, Liverpool fans were tested positive for the Biggest Frustration of 2020.

After bagging the Premier League 2019/2020 season champions title, many sports enthusiasts, commentators, and fans put faith in the Liverpool men that they would give their all until their final away game of the season. But their performance on July 3 was filled with one too many question marks.

The Reds’ star players like Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Virgin van Dijk lights were rather dim. On the flip side of the coin, Manchester City boys were able to deliver a remarkable performance.

Sergio Aguero was not able to join in the spectacular match because of a knee injury, and Fernandinho too because of a suspension. Many thought that their absence would have cost Manchester City. But we suppose that is how surprises work; they catch you off guard and startle you to your core either in a pleasant or the worst way.

With a shocking result of 4-0, Manchester City sure surprised their fans in the best possible way.

Manchester City VS Liverpool recap

If you are a Liverpool fan and you were watching the Etihad derby on iTV, you might have been holding the urge to punch the screen of your laptop, desktop, or mobile because of how frustrating the match the Reds men were presenting. This feeling surely was amplified because of how high the resolution is for the live stream (because iTV only streams the best-quality live sports events for its members), it would have felt as though you were spectating the derby at the actual stadium.

Manchester City’s guard of honor for Liverpool started the match.

The guard of honour garnered its attention for being, what the YouTube community mentioned in the comment section, the most half-hearted ceremonial guard they have seen any football club does and in the history of football.

One of the comments that received more than 1.5k likes wrote: The most half-arsed guard of honour I have ever seen.

In the first half of the match, a little over a 20th minute, a penalty was given to the Liverpool club because Gomez, who plays defender, got a hold of Raheem Sterling from City with his hand. His action impeded Raheem Sterling from scoring what could have added to City’s 5th goal.

Gomez’s yellow card was like an omen of a bad match coming up for Liverpool. And with that followed Manchester City’s first goal by Kevin De Bruyne. What do we even say? Kevin kicked the ball aiming towards the west side of the goalpost, while Alisson Becker, for whatever sake, decided that flopping himself to the east side of the goalpost was a great move.

The second goal arrived just about half an hour later after the match has begun. With Foden’s assist, he passed the ball to Raheem Sterling, who shot the ball from right outside of the penalty area. Alisson Becker could have prevented the goal from entering, had he not exited the goalpost area. Fans, who virtually participated in the match via a video call, were shouting with excitement over how smooth the goal was.

Two large projector screens were erected next to the goalposts on the seating area. Their sounds can be heard, which made it feel as though there were live crowds in the stadium.

Foden, a young lad of age 20 that plays as a midfielder, scored the last goal of the first half of the match. The passing of the ball to score Man City’s third goal showed great teamwork and shrewd. Rodri first passed the ball to Foden, but knowing he wouldn’t be able to steer clear of the Reds, Foden passed the ball to Gundogan, who then passed it back to Foden.

Entering the second half of the Etihad derby, Manchester City’s last goal was scored by Raheem Sterling, who plays as a winger and attacking midfielder.

All thanks to Mahrez, who kicked the ball so far, it traveled to quite a distance after the half-way line, where Kevin De Bruyne was able to catch it and pass to Sterling. It was a close call for Sterling because Andrew Robertson, the left-back for Liverpool, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, the right-back had surrounded him. Trent was so close to snatching the ball away from Sterling, but Sterling was quick to his feet. He kicked at the ball powerfully and shot it right into the goalpost.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who plays as a midfielder, attempted to stop the ball from entering the goal post. But luck was not on his side; he took a fall, scrapped his knees, and watched in helplessness as the ball bounced and hit the net.

Rahim Sterling, who is one of Manchester City’s star players, got candid in one of the interviews with Sky Sports and said that it was difficult for him to see Liverpool bag the Championships title. Manchester City was the seasons’ title-holder for two consecutive years until Liverpool became their new bogey team. Nonetheless, he congratulated Liverpool and said that they have been fantastic and deserved to win the league.

The Etihad match didn’t end at 90 minutes, though. There was an added time of four minutes. During this time, all eyes were on Riyad Mahrez.

Mahrez was able to swerve through Takumi Minamino and Jordan Henderson that was circling him. But Foden was tackled by Fabinho, which caused both of them to fall to the ground.

Mahrez was able to swiftly grab hold of the ball and kick it right into the goal post. But because Foden’s hand caught the ball when he and Fabinho landed on the ground, it was decided that Mahrez’s goal would be nulled and labeled as handball.

Immediately after, the referee blew the whistle, signifying the end of the Etihad match.
